Ex-Secretary Info, Gen Mujeeb passes away

ISLAMABADNULL former Secretary Information, Lt. General (Retd) Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Khan passed away at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Rawalpindi on Thursday.  

May Almighty Allah shower His countless blessings upon the departed soul and may his soul rest in peace in Heavens.

Starting his career as Commissioned Officer in Pakistan Army, Former Secretary 78, rose to Lt. General by dint of his hard work and professionalism and was considered as an expert of psychological warfare in military circles.

He was a veteran of 1965 war between Pakistan and India and actively participated at the war front besides highlighting the Kashmir cause among the masses. 

General Mujeeb also organized Sada-i-Kashmir [Voice of Kashmir] and promoted Pakistan stance on Kashmir. His services in this regard will long be remembered.

During his service in Army, he also served as Military Attache in Pakistan Embassy at Bangkok, Thailand. General Mujeeb also served as Instructor at Staff College Quetta and posted as Chief of Staff at 10 Corps, Rawalpindi.

He also served as Federal Secretary Information during regime of Late President General Zia-ul-Haq and being a close associate to the then President, the deceased convinced him to return to democracy which led to the formation of a political government of former Prime Minister Muhammad Khan Junejo.

During his tenure as Secretary Information, General Mujeeb introduced reforms in official media including Pakistan Television (PTV), Radio Pakistan and Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

He introduced dramas, social as well as educational programmes on PTV. The dramas like Andhera Ujala, Fifty-Fifty and many more attracted huge viewer ship.

The idea of celebrating August 14 as Independence Day of Pakistan in a befitting manner for 2-weeks every year was also given by General Mujeeb which infused enthusiasm and patriotism among the masses.

The other marvelous contribution, he extended during his tenure as Secretary Information was introduction of live coverage of major sports events. He was also fond of sports and used to play golf.

He served as Chairman, Literacy and Mass Education Commission and under its umbrella introduced - Nai Roshni Programme - throughout Pakistan to promote education and enhance literacy rate.

Eminent people from all segments of the society have condoled the sad demise of General (Retd) Mujeeb-ur-Rehman. The services of the late General would be long remembered with great respects and admiration, they said.

General Mujeeb has left behind four daughters, grand children and a great number of his admirers to mourn the irreparable loss. General Mujeeb will be laid to rest here today, Friday at H-8 Graveyard.

May Allah Almighty rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss with fortitude and equanimity. Aameen.
