US soldier killed in Afghanistan: NATO
'Pakistan Times' Wire Service

KABUL: A US soldier has been killed in eastern Afghanistan, the NATO-led force said Friday, where violence linked to a bloody Taliban insurgency has recently increased.

"An International Security Assistance Force service member was killed September 10 in an insurgent attack while on patrol in eastern Afghanistan," the force said, confirming he was from the United States.

It gave no further details of the incident which claimed the soldier's life, but the east has seen increased attacks by Taliban insurgents waging a violent battle to topple the government and oust foreign forces.

This year has been the deadliest for foreign troops since the Taliban were toppled in late 2001, with at least 330 international soldiers killed this year, according to the website that tracks deaths in the conflict.

So far in September, at least 21 foreign soldiers have been killed, it said, as ISAF forces continue to push into Taliban strongholds.

There are more than 100,000 mostly Western soldiers under NATO and US-led command deployed in Afghanistan to fight the Taliban insurgency.
