'Pakistan Times' Wire Service

KARACHI: Lightening triggered fire at an office of a private company in the PECHS area on Thursday.

According to police, no loss of life occurred in the incident. SSP Jamshed Quarter Javed Akbar said the fire was small and it was overcome.

Meanwhile, the spell of monsoon rains continued in different parts of the country including Rawalpindi and Islamabad while rain has been forecast in Karachi in the next 12 hours.

Heavy rains with stormy winds lashed Rawalpindi and Islamabad in early morning today while Met office has forecast more rains in the twin cities and other parts of the country in the coming hours.

Scorching heat subsided in Mardan district following a downpour in the area last night.

And, a report from Quetta says that the stormy downpours harmed Damani Delay Action Dam, which caused the several villages in Balochistan area of Barkhan to be inundated with many houses damaged.

Talking to Geo News, Irrigation Department Loralai Superintendent Engineer Sher Zaman said the lashing rains in Narkot area, 14 kilometers to east of District Barkhan, harmed under construction Damani Delay Action Dam, adding the team of his department is being dispatched to the area for inspection and restoration of the affected dam.

According to reports, the driving showers and the breach in the dam deluged the adjoining areas and many un-cemented houses were washed out, triggering the exodus of local people from the area.

The stormy rains started Wednesday night and continued for several hours, causing damage to the mud houses and rainwater entered several houses. However, no loss of life was hitherto reported.

Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raesaani took notice of embankment breach in Barkhan and directed the immediate activities. He has directed Commissioner Zhob to summarily submit report on Dam break and Provincial Disaster Management Authority to provide all available resources for the purpose.

At the same time, Director General Meteorological Department Qamar Zaman Chaudhary Thursday said that his department has not issued warning of floods in country’s rivers.

In a brief telephonic interview, the Met DG said that although various parts of the country have begun receiving monsoon rains but at present  the situation of water flow in the rivers was not alarming.

He said  that Karachi and its surrounding areas may receive more rain  in next couple of days but their intensity may not be the same as that of the earlier spell.
