Canada drops case against four terror suspects
‘Pakistan Times’ Monitoring Desk

OTTAWA (Canada): Canadian authorities have dropped charges against four suspects nearly two years after they were arrested as part of an alleged terror network, justice officials here said.

Indictments against the men were stayed and the four signed "peace bonds" which require them to hand over their passports and obey a curfew. Authorities did not explain why they dropped the charges.

The move sends "the strongest signal yet that the portion of the case dealing with an alleged terror training camp is much weaker than first believed,” a newspaper said.

The four men were part of a group of 18 people, who were arrested in 2006 and accused of being part of a terror cell planning attacks in Toronto and against parliament.

The suspension of charges is technically good for one year, but a spokesman explained it essentially means the charges have been dropped unless new information should arise in connection with the case.●
