ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday said the government was committed to maintain minimum credible defence of the country through conventional and strategic capabilities.

Talking to Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Tariq Majeed at PM House, the Prime Minister said Pakistan had a major role to play for peace in the region and the government would never compromise on its security.

The Prime Minister lauded the role of armed forces during calamities, particularly in the wake of October 2005 earthquake and floods that hit various parts of the country.

The Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee apprised the Prime Minister about his recent visit to Jordan as well as on the performance and professional activities of the three armed services.

He also updated the Prime Minister about the ongoing upgradation programmes in defence sector.●
