India to launch Agni-III ballistic missile next month

NEW DELHI: India will launch Agni-III ballistic missile with a range of 3500 kms next month Agni-III, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been described as not just a missile, but a system for the future with which various configurations can be developed, The Hindu reported.

Agni-III, to be launched for the third time, is a two-stage, long-range missile that weighs 48.3 tonnes and is 16.7 metres long. It can carry warheads weighing 1.5 tonnes over a distance of more than 3,500 km.

On Sunday, India launched Agni-I missile from the Wheeler Island that reached a distance of more than 700km. A press release issued by the DRDO here said the missile had a textbook performance in terms of range, accuracy and lethality.

V.K. Saraswat, Chief Controller, R and D (Missiles and Strategic Systems), DRDO, said the Agni-1 missile will give a boost to India's strategic defence.●
