ISLAMABAD: President Pakistan Muslim League Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain
Wednesday refuted the claim of Benazir Bhutto that government has made its
mind to defer the election for one year.
Speaking in a state-run television programme, the veteran politician said
that most of statements, issued by PPPP Chairperson are based on newspapers’
reports.
He said Benazir Bhutto has been making frequent changes in her stance adding
“I can’t comment on her rapidly changing statements”.
Prior to her return to country, Benazir Bhutto had committed to work for the
promotion of democracy and national reconciliation but her behaviour after
coming back was somewhat different, he said.
Shujaat made it clear election would be held on scheduled time and there
should be no other opinion in this regard.
He said the government had no intention to impose emergency but some
developments and incidents which took place in near past, compelled it to
take the step.
He said the administration was rendered paralyzed and the terrorist
incidents were occurring frequently.
The citizens were aware of the developments taking place in country and they
were in a state of confusion, he said.
Had the situation prevailed, it would have proved dangerous for country and
its people, he added.
He said as soon as situation gets normal the emergency will be lifted
without any delay.
Shujaat regretted that the media has failed to play its impartial role
following government’s concessions.
It was observed that some media channels were busy in promoting confusion
and uncertainty in society he said adding the sensitive scenes were being
shown to audiences by the private television channels.
He advised the media organizers to keep national interest supreme in
professional assignment.●
