Pakistan Times National News Desk

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Thursday approved a plan for the up gradation of all public sector schools and colleges of Islamabad Capital Territory to make them a model for the entire country.

He was chairing a meeting here to review the implementation of education and administrative reforms in the educational institutions managed by the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE).

The Prime Minister said the government is investing in education to better equip our youth to face the challenges of today and tomorrow.

He said improvements have been made in the curricula, educational system and physical facilities to produce scholars who are globally competitive and creative.

“Our youth are second to none and given the right opportunities so that they can excel in every field. We need to unleash the creativity of our students to leverage their full potential,” he said.

Shaukat Aziz said we have come a long way but a lot more need to be done. The government is focusing both on improving the literacy rate especially female literacy and on bringing improvement in the quality and relevance of education, he said.

The Prime Minister asked the Ministry of Education (MoE) to keep a balance between formal education and extra-curricular activities, such as field trips to broaden the minds of students and build their balanced personalities.

He also asked the MoE to initiate the process for ranking of colleges in the public sector, adding the ranking criteria should be transparent and well publicized.

Under the up gradation plan approved by the Prime Minister all schools and colleges in Islamabad will have better teaching facilities, better labs and facilities for technical education and career counselling among many other features.

The Prime Minister also reviewed the progress in setting up College of Home Economics and Management Sciences in Islamabad and asked the concerned officials to expedite the process.

Earlier, Director General of Directorate of Education made a presentation highlighting the conceptual framework and broad parameters of the up gradation plan.

The Prime Minister appreciated the plan presented by the MoE and asked the concerned authorities to ensure its implementation.

The meeting was attended among others by Minister for Education Lt-Gen (Retd) Javed Ashraf, Minister of State for Education Ms Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli and senior officials.●
