Badminton Tournament: Umer of Pakistan Wins Singles Title

ISLAMABAD: Umer Zeeshan of Pakistan captured the singles title while Sri Lankan pair grabbed the doubles event of the President of Pakistan International Invitational Badminton Tournament at Liaquat Gymnasium on Friday.

Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed was the chief guest on the concluding day of the tournament and gave away the prizes.

Umer Zeeshan beat Iran's best player Ali Shah Hussaine in straight games 21-10, 21-19 to land the singles crown in front of jubilant home fans at Liaquat Gymnasium, Pakistan Sports Complex.

Umer mixed powerful smashes with deft placings to outsmart the Iranian who fought well in the second set but to no avail.

Brothers pair of Dinuka and Diluka Kartayratne of Sri Lanka then overcame the

loss of first game to eventually emerge a 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 victor over Iranians Ali Shah Hussaine and Omid Karame.

The three-day Islamabad leg of the triseries comprised individual singles and doubles event. Pakistan had already won the team event played in Lahore, beating Iran 5-0 and Sri Lanka 3-2.●
