Pakistan-NATO for Long-term
Sustainable Ties

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have
underlined the need for long term sustainable relationship to promoting
peace and security in the region.
This was discussed at a meeting between Minster of State for Defence, Ch.
Ali Asjad Malhi and the visiting Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee,
General Ray HENAULT, who called on the Minister, here Thursday.
Both sides discussed and reviewed the existing level of cooperation and also
exchanged views on the geo-strategic situation of the region with special
reference to Afghanistan.
The meeting focused on Pakistan’s role against the war on terror.
The Minister told General Ray HENAULT that Pakistan was strongly committed
to curbing the menace of extremism and terrorism.
He highlighted the anti-terror measures taken by Pakistan including the
deployment of 80,000 (eighty thousand) troops on its western border with the
principal purpose to defeat and stamp out terrorist elements.
The Chairman of the Military Committee of NATO deeply acknowledged
Pakistan’s contribution and key role in this regard and said Pakistan
counter-terrorism efforts were vital for combating and eliminating the
faceless enemy.
General Ray HENAULT also praised Pakistan’s participation in United Nations
peace-keeping operations.
The Minister thanked the NATO for assisting Pakistan in the wake of October
8 earthquake.
The meeting stressed the need for enhanced interactions and cooperation
between Pakistan and NATO which was imperative for promoting peace in the
region.
General Ray HENAULT assured Pakistan of NATO’s support in global war on
terror.
He expressed the hope that his visit would further improve and strengthen
ties between the two sides.●
