JAIPUR (India): The first
ever convoy of 28 cars from South Asian countries reached here on Tuesday
after being flagged off by eight prime ministers of SAARC member states in
New Delhi.
Prime Minister of Pakistan Shaukat Aziz along with his other counterparts
including Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh flagged off the SAARC Car
Rally in a ceremony arranged in the Indian capital on the first day of the
14th SAARC Summit.
The SAARC caravan reached Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, also known as
the Pink City, in evening where the participants will stay for one night
before continuing their journey to Mumbai.
The convoy will resume its journey on Wednesday, the 21st day of the rally,
and will cover about 500 kilometers to reach Udaipur for overnight stay.
The four member team of Afghanistan has also joined the car rally.
It is pertinent to mention that in this four hundred years old city of
Jaipur all buildings are painted pink owing to which it is commonly known as
the Pink City.
In 1919, King Edward of England visited Jaipur. As pink was his favorite
colour, the Maharaja of Jaipur ordered to paint all the buildings of the
city with the same colour.●
