Pakistan sets Sights on International Markets

ISLAMABAD: The government has taken a number of steps to increase export to international markets.

More than 36 varieties of vegetables including potato, cabbage, cauliflower, turnip, green chillies, onion and dry spices are produced in the country and exported abroad, a private TV reported.

Major markets for export are Asian countries, Europe, Africa, Saudi Arabia and UAE.

The area under fruit plantation in Pakistan increased by 22 per cent during 2005-06 and fruit production showed a 21.1 per cent increase in the same period as a result of favourable weather conditions.

Acreage for vegetables and fruits increased by 19.2 per cent and production was up by 12.7 per cent.

Fruits, vegetables and juices have a significant share in Pakistan’s exports earning Rs.9928.6 million profit for the country last year and registering a 52 percent increase.●
