Aqeel, Nida grab Pakistan Open Tennis Titles

KARACHI: As expected Aqeel Khan and Nida Wasim grabbed men’s and women’s singles crown in the Pakistan Open Tennis Championship at City District court on Monday.

Davis Cupper Aqeel faced stiff challenge from younger brother Jalil Khan before chalking out 7-5, 7-6 success.

Against the expectations, Jalil also a member of Pakistan Davis Cup team produced a sterling show against his fancied brother.

Though Aqeel enjoyed the upper hand in the first set lasting 37 minutes.

However, Jalil played some brilliant ground strokes and passing shots to show his class.

After hard fought first set, Jalil also put a great show by taking his Aqeel into a tie-breaker before going down after an hour and 50 minute encounter.

Aqeel collected Rs.30,000 for winning the title while Jalil contended with Rs 14,000.

Nida Wasim faced no problem in routing her Islamabad Sara Mansoor by dropping just one game in the second set. She grabbed the prize money of Rs 15,000 and Sara got Rs 10,000.

Nasir Mushtaq won the junior under-17 singles final with one sided 6-1, 6-2 victory over Zuhair Raza to collect Rs.10,000 winners purse.

Numeer Shamsi clinched the boys under-13 singles title with hard fought 6-4, 6-3 triumph.

In the meantime three Khan bother Aqeel, Jalil and Yasir will be leaving for Islamabad to appear in the national tennis trials starting from Tuesday.

Pakistan Tennis Federation is conducting the trials to select, Pakistan team for their Davis Cup tennis Asia-Ocenia group-II tie held at Manila (Philippines) from February 9.●
