KARACHI: All Pakistan
Women's Tennis Championship will be held at City Sports Complex tennis
courts next month, Shahida Farooq, Executive Committee Member Pakistan
Tennis Federation (PTF) said Tuesday.
She said they will be inviting girls and women players from across the
country to feature in Rs100,000 championship. The event will be held under
the auspices of Subhe Nau.
PTF member said basic purpose of conducting this women event was also to
revive and activate the tennis at City Sports Complex which recently staged
the Pakistan Open.
"We are planning to write all the universities, colleges and schools to send
their players for this event," Shahida Farooq said. The holding of the event
will be good build-up for the National Games to be held in second week of
March.
She said they are making efforts to bring the tennis courts at par
international standard to revive the sport in the city which has produced
good tennis players.
"A tennis academy will also be set-up at the courts to train and coach
promising boys and girl players," she maintained. Without establishing
facilities we can not lift the standard of tennis," she added.
She said tennis courts will be refurbished for upcoming ladies event and for
national games.
Shahida Farooq said Karachi will also stage two International Tennis
Federation (ITF) Junior events in April besides holding National Hard Court
Tennis Championship.
PTF lady member expressed her dismay at shifting of national trials to
Islamabad at the last minute. "Karachi would have been best place for
preparations for tennis team and for trials because of same kind climate in
Manila which is staging Davis Cup tie," she pointed out.●
