Call by Ki-moon
By the Editor

AMID multiple challenges due to worsening scenario in diverse vicinities in ‘the global village’—which is indexed as ‘world’ in lexicon, the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon has come out with a plea to comity of nations to respect the international law and try to implement it sans any reservations.

Giving impetus to his call, he has overtly made clear that respect for international law is essential for world peace and security.

There can’t be two opinions about insistent need for respect and implementation of the international law. With that alone will emerge an environment of tolerance and accommodation at the international level.

By now, the world has unfortunately witnessed unprecedented erosion of the global law over the years as the UN literally failed to play its fitting role vis-à-vis the international affairs.

As a matter of realism, the world body had turned into a subsidiary of the Capitol Hill during the previous Secretary General’s two tenures. The solo superpower had also taken it for granted and acted impulsively and whimsically in utter disregard to the UN authority.

To quote just an instance, Washington invaded Baghdad despite worldwide opposition and UN Security Council’s reservations that undermined the moral authority of the world body.

Yet, the UN watched it all feebly as it had turned ineffectual due to the inaction on the part of the former chief of UN Kofi Annan.

Paradoxically, it is still ineffective in dealing with the international issues and problems—of highly serious and sensitive nature.

If analyzed with truth, it has lost its efficacy especially for the smaller and weaker nations.

Even then, we endorse the observations of the new Secretary General about respect and implementation of the international law.

Fascinatingly, the call doesn’t have any thing new in content as the previous UN chief too had been resorting to such rhetoric time and again without practical steps to make global environs—safe and secure.

This proved beyond any shadow of doubt that his professions and actions were clearly contradictory.

We feel optimistic that the new UN chief will display a moral face to make sure the realization of the international law and would not feel content with mere rhetorical proclamations—to translate his dreams into a reality by fetching all-out peace all-over, not only to get his name cataloged in the history—as a unique soul but also save innocent lives, being lost at manifold soils, with every sun-up—with India held-Kashmir, Palestinian territories and Iraq—atop.

To accomplish this significant and critical taxing task, the UN boss shall have to reform the world body’s set-up.

Simultaneously, Ki-moon shall have to play a pivotal role in convincing all the members of the United Nations to discard hates and dislikes of all types with justice and equilibrium as the hallmark for achieving the pragmatic objectives of the UN Charter—so that the world body doest meet the fate, which was faced by the League of Nations due to its own faults and failures—decades ago.●
