Pakistan wins Intl Telecommunication Union

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Major Gen (Retd) Shahzada Alam
Malik has been elected as member of Radio Regulation Board (RRB) of
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in an election held on Thursday
at Anatolia, Turkey.
Pakistan has also won the Council seat of International Telecommunication
Union (ITU).
Chairman PTA contested election from Pakistan and secured 110 votes. Five
countries including Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Iran and New Zealand
contested for the membership of three seats for Radio Regulation Board while
162 countries voted for this election.
Currently the Plenipotentiary Conference of ITU is underway in Turkey which
is the top policy making body of ITU.
The Conference adopts resolutions and modifies the ITU Constitution and
Convention.
The RRB and Council seats elections are the part of the conference. The
election of Secretary General of the ITU was completed prior to the RRB
election and Hamadoun
I.
Toure has been elected as the Secretary General of ITU. A team lead by
Minister for IT and Telecom Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Secretary IT and
Telecom Farrukh Qayyum,
Pakistani Ambassador to Turkey Lt. General (Retd) Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah
and Ambassador Geneva Mission Masood Khan have played an active role in
securing Council seat and RRB membership.
Pakistan also holds the office of President in Asia Pacific Telecommunity
(APT). Maj. Gen. ® Shahzada Alam Malik was elected as President during the
10th Session of APT General Assembly held in Islamabad last November.
This is the second strategic position gained by Pakistan on international
telecom scenario. Chairman PTA will remain member of RRB for next four
years.●
