Reshuffling the UN
By the
Editor
WHILE
getting into a tête-à-tête with media in Oslo, Pakistan’s Prime Minister
Shaukat Aziz has underlined the need for restructuring of the United
Nations, to make it vibrant and responsive to international developments, in
line with its Charter.
The Premier was in Oslo to preside over a meeting of the UN panel, assigned
to make recommendations, for improvement of the world body’s performance.
If one takes the overall performance, a reality that would emerge crystal
clear is that, by all perceptions, the United Nations has become ineffective
and is incapable to prove true to its mandate especially, vis-à-vis the poor
and weaker nations.
Pragmatically, the UN has lost its moral force, since it has despicably
turned itself into an instrument, just to facilitate the solo big power,
prima facie to achieve its global agenda.
It’s because of its deplorable conduct of playing in the hands of the lone
superpower, that it has lost its mandate and authority to come to the rescue
of the poor and weaker nations in the world.
As for its’ resolutions, including almost a dozen of Kashmir, all are being
trampled with impunity even by countries like Israel and India since it has
miserably failed to uphold justice, truth and righteousness.
Amid such a scenario, the UN has virtually lost its relevance to the global
ground realities, overtly due to its conduct based on expediencies.
Unless it’s extricated and set free from the clutches of the big (s), there
is hardly any possibility of it becoming a body receptive to the imperatives
of international peace and tranquillity in true sense of the word.
We think, it will not be inapt to suggest that, the UN will continue to be a
subsidiary to the US, as long as its headquarters stay located in New York.
To make the world body, an effective, viable and responsive international
organisation, its headquarters shall have to be shifted to Geneva, to
provide neutral environment for its operation.
There is, thus, urgent need to debate the issue at different levels to rid
the UN of a solitary influence, which brings in exploitation.
We feel optimistic that though the political restructuring of the world
body, is not the agenda of Oslo moot, the issue will expectant, be viewed
with the sense of urgency, if not anything else, at lease for the best
possible amiable environments for the new generations, who are faced with a
lot of perils and every sunup brings for them risks, fears and angst,
instead of love, happiness and of-course with affluence, atop.
This dream can be translated into reality, very conveniently, by resoling
all the pending and prolonged issues, like Kashmir and Palestine, which is,
in no way a taxing task for the UN, as took birth for global peace.
And certainly not to promote or encourage skirmishes and scuffles, which are
phrased in the lexicon of peace-loving nations, as the biggest foe of the
peoples, wherever they live on the Orb.●
