204,000 people displaced in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO: The recent escalation of fighting in the north and east of Sri Lanka has displaced 204,000 people, the U.N.'s food agency said Friday.

In a week, the figure has gone from about 182,000 to 204,000, and the number is still increasing, Jeff Taft-Dick, country director of the World Food Program, told reporters in Colombo.

Taft-Dick said food stocks were running low and aid agencies were unable to move relief supplies into some areas because of restrictions by the government.●
