India’s Nuclear Tests
By the Editor

WITH habitual leaning for belligerence, India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has said that his country will not forfeit its right to carry out future nuclear tests despite civilian nuclear deal with the United States.

The Singh has been quoted by a news agency, as saying; ‘it will be decided by the people, Government and Parliament of the country and not by any outside power’.

Analyzing with realities, this statement has focused two vital points, which are; the US nuclear deal will not prevent India from producing nuclear bombs, contrary to the impression created at the time of its signing and that the threat of nuclear race in the region shall persist.

And both these points are fraught with serious ramifications, for regional peace and security.

India has already polluted South Asia, with its Pokhran nuclear explosion in 1974 and had forced Pakistan, to conduct nuclear tests for the sake of its national security and sovereignty in response to Delhi’s provocation of nuclear tests in May, 1998 amidst threats of invasion.

In fact, India had always entertained the ambition to acquire nuclear dominance in the region, which Pakistan had, however, shattered with its nuclear tests.

Manmohan ‘s statement, thus, calls for a constant vigil, since it is fraught with diverting the attention of the regional countries especially Pakistan, from economy and development that are so vital to banish poverty, hunger, disease and want from South Asia.

Ironically more than half of the hapless billion plus populace of the region, leads the life below the poverty line, with India on the top of the list.
Amid this reality, it’s really unfortunate that in its bid to build India against China emerging as an economic and military power, Washington has blinded itself to the objective realities in the region.

Seemingly, it has turned its face from the Kashmir issue, which, of-course is phrased as nuclear flashpoint by the comity of nations.

At the same time, encouraging nuclear race in this part of the Orb, would eventually prove to be, detriment of peace, security and stability of South Asia

We think, it is high time that the rulers in New Delhi, should take care of much-needed requires to ensure socio-economic well-being of their own people, instead of embarking on nuclear plans to the disadvantage of their interests, as we feel optimistic, the poor, deprived and down-trodden human beings would never forgive the Indian rulers, as is indexed in the history, with the words; the natural phenomenon.●
