Pakistan's Yasir grabs U-17 singles Crown

KARACHI: Fast rising Yasir Khan grabbed the Junior Under-17 singles crown in the Arif Habib Group National Ranking Tennis Championship, overpowering Sheharyar Wali in straight sets at Karachi Club Hard court Friday.

Yasir, the youngest of three tennis brothers of Aqeel and Jalil, produced superior all-round court craft to end the fine run of play by Sheharyar.
14-year-old Sheharyar, offered some challenge to Yasir Khan before going down.

Yasir displayed fine ground strokes, cross courts and serve and volley game to carve out 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Sheharyar, who is studying in USA and currently on holidays, at times played several forceful winners to show his promise. But he failed to match the skill and talent of Yasir.

Sara Mahboob advanced in the final of Rs.360,000 championship when she overcame spirited Sehar Khawaja. In a base line play Sara showed consistent to emerge 6-4, 6-4 in a draw of eight players.

Brothers pair of Aqeel Khan and Jalil clinched the men’s doubles on default after minor accident involving Nomi Qamar, who was scheduled partner Asim Shafiq in the final.

Nomi slight hurt his knee and had a minor injury on the forehead and thus conceded their doubles final.

Men’s singles semifinals will be contested on Saturday while final will be contested on Sunday. Following are result: Ladies singles (semifinal): Sara Mehboob bt Shear Khawaja 6-4, 6-2. Junior Under-17 singles final: Yasir Khan bt Sheharyar Wali 6-4, 6-4 Boys under-13 doubles (semifinals): Mustufa Zaidi bt Shamoon 6-1, 6-1, Syed Zohair Raza bt Abdul Rehman 6-1, 6-3.●
