ISLAMABAD: Having assurance by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority that central excise duty would be withdrawn, the cable TV operators in Pakistan have called off strike.

Sources say, the prime minister has appointed a committee under his Principal Secretary Javed Sadiq Malik including Chairman CBR and Chairman PEMRA among other relevant officials.

The notification of the committee was not yet issued and was likely to be issued in a day or two, the sources added.

As an immediate relief to both the cable operators and the consumers the prime minister also directed the CBR not to charge, until the final decision, Rs 25 per connection levied in the budget 2006-07 and enforced from July-1, 2006.
