'Pakistan Times' Political Desk

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Sher Afgan Khan Niazi said on Saturday that under the constitution of Pakistan present assemblies are bound to elect the president for next five years.

As per constitution, the present assemblies have to elect the president in the presidential elections, which should be held between September 16 to October 15 and other candidates could participate in the elections, he said on Saturday.

The tenure of the assemblies would not be extended for one year, Afgan said. However, he said only in case of emergency the tenure of assemblies could be extended and the provincial assemblies would be dissolved.

The general elections would be held in time, he said and added, the tenure of assemblies will be completed in November and the schedule of new elections would be announced in the same month.

The power would be transferred to the new government by February 2008 after holding the general elections, Afgan said.●
