Resolution of Conflicts

WITH
great love and adore for global peace, President Pervez Musharraf has called
for addressing the root causes of terrorism and underscored the need for
resolution of conflicts such as Palestine and Kashmir to ensure peace,
security and economic development in Asia.
Speaking to the second summit of the Conference on Interaction and
Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), he said CBMs can help manage
conflict, but these must pave the way for their resolution for durable
peace.
President Musharraf has seldom missed any international forum to emphasize
the need for conflict resolution for the sake of world peace.
The world is today confronted with the menace of terrorism due to
non-resolution of the issues that have direct bearing on the destinies of
people.
Kashmir and Palestine issues are lingering on for the past six decades. The
Kashmiris and Palestinians are being subjected to injustice and deprivation
that lead to hopelessness, frustration and revolt invariably taking the form
of extremism and terrorism.
What’s, therefore, important is that the root causes of terrorism need to be
addressed if the menace is to be curbed for good. There is no short-cut nor
can any cosmetic measure help retrieve the situation.
President Musharraf’s call to the CICA member States to seek resolution of
the conflicts that has the potential of generating terrorism, therefore,
represents the imperative need of the hour for the sake of world peace,
security and stability.
Pakistan is mindful of the pain that is inflicted due to terrorism, since it
has long endured the menace. It has suffered life losses of its sons at the
hands of the terrorists. Its contribution in the war against terrorism is
acknowledged by the world at large.
Pakistan, therefore, wants to see an end to the menace. And that will be
possible only if conflicts like Kashmir and Palestine are resolved and
injustice being inflicted on the subjugated people is brought to an end.
A greater responsibility in this connection, however, devolves on the UN and
the world community to seek resolution of the disputes that have the
potential of generating terrorism.
It’s really unfortunate that both the UN and the world community are silent
spectators to the oppression, brutalization and injustice to which the
Palestinians and Kashmiris are being subjected to.
When will their conscience be pricked to protect humanity from extermination
in Palestine and Kashmir?●
