No Tobacco Day in Pakistan Today

LAHORE: Like other parts of
the world, No Tobacco Day will be observed in Pakistan today, May-31
(Wednesday) to create awareness among people about the hazards of smoking.
Despite various technological advancements in the field of medicine, tobacco
still claims one life every ten seconds in the world.
According to health experts, smoking is one of the leading causes of
preventable death with the dubious distinction of affecting all the systems
from head to foot.
Tobacco can be consumed in various forms such as a cigar or cigarette, in a
smoking pipe, in a water pipe, by a hookah, by chewing or by using finely
powdered snuff tobacco, which is sniffed into the nose.
But of all these, smoking the tobacco in the form of cigarette, is the
predominant form of tobacco used worldwide.
The chances of smokers becoming afflicted with cancer are high. Several
studies have shown that the various carcinogens in the cigarette smoke can
cause cancer. Cancer is most likely to occur in organs like lungs, oral
cavity which comes into direct contact with smoke.
When the substances delivered in cigarette smoke are absorbed and spread
through the human body, smoking causes cancer in various body organs.●
