SRINAGAR (IHK): Ten children died Tuesday when an Indian navy boat capsized in a lake in held Kashmir, police said.

The children were having a ride in the navy boat when it capsized in Wular Lake, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of the Srinagar, a police spokesman said.

"So far 10 students are dead. We are trying to ascertain the number of missing students," he said.

The students had come to the lake on an excursion from a high school in northern Handwara town.

"During the ride the students got excited and shifted their weight to one side, which led to the boat capsizing," army spokesman Vijay Batra told media.
