Spurious Drugs Mafia

A THREE-member Bench
of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has
directed President Gen Pervez Musharraf to promulgate a presidential
ordinance to effectively check the production and marking of spurious drugs
in the Pakistan.
It also asked the Federal and Provincial Governments to chuck out all
spurious drugs within 15 days.
The problem of spurious
drugs has remained serious as merchants of death have been playing with
innocent lives with impunity in their lust for easy and quick wealth. They
are obviously heartless people and are devoid of morality and ethics.
It’s deplorable that the individuals and agencies responsible for checking
the spurious drugs are not operative and the people have been left at the
mercy of the greedy mafia.
It’s, therefore, a matter of satisfaction that the Chief Justice has taken
suo motu notice of the situation in response to the public agony on account
of the hazards to life.
His decision to direct the President to issue presidential ordinance to deal
with the menace efficiently is an obvious manifestation of his deep concern
over the immoral conduct of some unscrupulous elements engaged in acquiring
material gains at the cost of public lives.
The fact that the Chief Justice has been over the period of time, taking suo
motu notice of various issues obviously speaks of the poor governance in the
country.
To the masses, good governance means availability of proper education,
health and social justice in the country. It’s unfortunate that nothing is
moving in the country in the social sectors without the apex court’s
intervention.
This is undoubtedly yet another positive initiative on the part of the
Supreme Court for the sake of public welfare. It’s hoped that the initiative
will yield desirable results and will not only help deal with the mafia, but
will also go a long in saving public lives from hazards due to spurious
drugs.
It’s hoped that the Federal and Provincial Governments will also enforce the
existing laws in letter and in spirit to substantiate the presidential
ordinance to be issued as per the apex court’s directive.●
