Bodies of 14 electrocuted recovered as Indus, Kabul rivers stay in high flood

SUKKUR: The river Indus at Guddu barrage is in highPakistani villagers swim carrying their belongings to safe places after heavy flash flooding in Multan on Wednesday, July-13, 2005. flood with falling tendency while the river Kabul at Nowshera and the river Swat at Munda are in high flood with rising tendency.

Flood Warning Centre says, the river Indus is in medium-to-high flood at Sukkur, medium flood at Kalabagh and Chashma and low-to-medium flood at Tarbela with rising tendency. It is in low flood at Taunsa with rising tendency.

The river Jhelum is in low flood at Mangla while the river Chenab is in low flood at Marala, Khanki, Qadirabad and Chiniot bridge while it is flowing below low flood level at Trimmu and Panjand. The rivers Ravi and Sutlaj are flowing below low flood level at all points.

According to flood Forecasting Division, Water discharge in Indus at Guddu would fall from 5.26 lakh cusecs to between 5.25 to 4.60 lakh cusecs during next 24 hours.

Water Discharge

At Sukkur water discharge would rise from 4.92 lakh cusecs to 4.95 to 5.15 lakh cusecs during next 24 hours. Medium flood mark at this points is 3.50 lakh cusecs and high flood mark 5.0 lakh cusecs. Water discharge at Kotri would rise from 1.17 lakh cusecs to 1.20 to 1.35 lakh cusecs while low flood mark at this point is 2.50 lakh cusecs.

Water discharge at Tarbela would rise from 3.28 lakh cusecs to between 3.30 lakh cusecs to 3.80 lakh cusecs during next 24 hours. Medium flood level at this point is 3.75 lakh cusecs and high flood mark 5.0 lakh susecs.

Water discharge would also rise at Kalabagh to 3.50 lakh to 4.0 lakh cusecs during next 24 hours from 3.49 lakh cusecs.

Water discharge in Chenab at Marala was 1.25 lakh cusecs on Tuesday morning and it would be between 1.0 to 1.40 lakh cusecs during next 24 hours,at Khanki and Qadirabad it would be between 80 thousand cusecs to 1.10 lakh cusecs during next 24 hours. Low flood level mark at Marala, Khanki and Qadiarbad is 1.0 lakh cusecs.

Trimmu


At Trimmu water level is likely to fall from 1.63 lakh cusecs to 1.60 lakh to 1.0 lakh cusecs during next 24 hours . However it would rise from 37 thousand cusecs to between 40 thousand cusecs to 60 thousand cusecs during next 24 hours. Low flood mark at this point is 1.50 lakh cusecs.

Flood Forecasting Division has predicted isolated thunderstorm/rain for upper catchment areas of the river Indus and Ravi and Scattered thunderstorm /rain for upper catchment areas of the river Jhelum and Chenab.

Mainly dry weather has been forecast for upper catchment areas of the river Sutlej. Rain has also been forecast for lower catchment areas of the rivers Indus (Rawalpindi Division ),Jhelum (Sargodha Division), Chenab (Gujranwala Division and Ravi (Lahore Division).

Damage to Crops


Meanwhile, according to sources of Flood Relief Commissioner office, 5,34,399 acres of land have been affected in 12 districts of the province with crops damaged over 2,93,580 acres of land.

Rahim Yar Khan has been included in the list of districts affected by recent flash floods with 23 relief camps established there. Crops over 81806 acres have been affected in 80 villages in the district.

Flood Relief Commissioner office sources said; 222 relief camps have been set up in the affected areas of the province and relief goods including food and medicines are being provided to affectees. Majority of the people living in riverine area in district Rahim Yar Khan have been moved to safer places in view of apprehension of surge in hill torrents during next few days.

Kabul River


Flood warning centre NWFP says, Kabul river at Nowshera, Khiali river, Panjkora river at Dir, Chitral river at Chitral and Indus river at Besham were in high flood, where the discharge of water was 142400, 20497, 43400 and 346300 cusecs respectively.

Indus River at Attock and Chashma, Kabul River at Warsak, Swat River at Amandara, Kaitu River at Spinwam and Indus River at Bunji were in medium flood, where the discharge of water was 418100, 392702, 91085, 37051, 3111 and 268600 cusecs respectively.●
