Remember French Revolution, Mr Aziz? FINANCE Minister Shaukat Aziz has proudly claimed collection of Rs 510.6 billion taxes during the year ending June 30, 2004 and he hoped to collect Rs 580 billion during the current fiscal year. But he did not mention the unprecedented increase in cost of living and misery of the common people since October 1999. The designated Prime Minister, basically a banker trained and experienced for success through money collection, should now learn that success of the government is judged by improvement in quality of life of the people and not by the amount of money squeezed out of them. He should also be conscious of the fact that the French Prime Minister’s reckless and merciless taxing of the common people to meet requirements of foreign debt servicing and luxuries of the King and the nobles triggered the bloody French Revolution in 1789.● N.B.: E-mail your Letters to the Editor, with full name, e-mail address and contact information at letters@pakistantimes.net The views expressed in these columns depict the personal perception of each writer.
