Davenport captures San Diego, Federer
picks ATP title SAN DIEGO (California, US): Lindsay Davenport captured her third straight tournament in three weeks, beating Anastasia Myskina 6-1, 6-1 in the final of the 1.3 million dollar WTA San Diego event on Sunday. The No. 4 seeded American won her second career San Diego title and extended her winning streak to 14 consecutive matches. Myskina appeared to run out of gas on Sunday after a thrilling two hour, 28 minute semi-final victory over compatriot Vera Zvonareva the night before. With Sunday's win Davenport duplicates her 1998 feat of winning all three legs of the California hardcourt season - tuneup events leading into next month's US Open. She also won the Bank of
the West Classic at Stanford and the J.P. Morgan Chase Open in Los Angeles. Federer, currently the undisputed king of the courts, celebrated his Swiss national day in impressive style as he notched a 10th straight winning final, duplicating his victory over the American four weeks ago at the All England club. The big-hitting Roddick, usually a formidable threat on serve, was meekly out-aced by Federer 14 to four. "I'm doing fine," said Federer. "I can't believe I'm winning every match. I'd love to keep this going." Federer has now won eight titles this season, including four in a row. His last three came at Wimbledon, Gstaad and now Toronto. He is the first player since Bjorn Borg in 1979 to win three titles in a row on three different surfaces - grass, clay and hardcourt. "Bjorn Borg is my hero," said the 22-year-old. "I've met him once and I'd like to do so again, He's a great player and a great person, This is something for the history books. "It was very good match," he added. "I'm very, very happy. I've won another title and on another surface." The top-seeded world number one broke Roddick in the last game of the opening set and twice in the second to seal his superiority. All of the four break points he faced were saved with aces.Three of those came in the ninth game of the opening set, when Federer fired three aces in a row to get himself out of a jam and hold for 5-4. "I was hoping to come up with some good serves. But you'd have to pay a lot of money to get three in a row like that," said the somewhat astonished Swiss.Trailing 5-6, Roddick saved one set point with a leaping volley, but on Federer's second set point Roddick sent a forehand long. 0Roddick's frustration was evident after a set full of 20 unforced errors, the American bouncing his racket so hard on the court it landed in a sideline photo pit.● |
