Four fighters, seven soldiers killed in Chechnya

VLADIKAVKAZ (Chechnya): Russian positions in Chechnya were attacked 15 times by separatist fighters in the past day, leaving seven Russian soldiers dead and five wounded, an official in the Moscow-backed Chechen administration said Saturday.

In the southern Nozhai-Yurt region, Russian troops clashed with Chechen fighters after a reconnaissance unit patrolling near the village of Gansolchu encountered more than 20 rebels.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said two soldiers and four fighters were killed in that clash; two soldiers were wounded.

The press center for the North Caucasus regional counterterrorism headquarters, however, said six rebel fighters were killed. It gave no figures for Russian casualties.
