Monsoon improves water level of Pakistan's
Dams
Pakistan
Times Federal Bureau Report
ISLAMABAD: The water level
in three dams of the twin cities has improved due to current spell of
monsoon rainfalls in catchment areas, official sources said Sunday.
The water level has increased by two feet and the water supply to federal
capital is likely to be increased in next few days in view of the increase
in water reserves.
The sources said water level in Simly dam recorded on Sunday was 2,251.5,
feet against 2,248 feet two days ago.
The Met office has predicted that the present monsoon rainfalls will be
raise water level of three reservoirs including Simly, Rawal and Khanpur
dams.
An official said these dams including Mangla dam mostly depend on monsoon
rains. However, that big dams including Tarbela depend on winter rainfalls.
He predicted that the intensity of current monsoon is likely to increase
after three days which will be helpful in further improving the water level.
The official said, due to persisting dry spell and increase in demand of
water the water levels had declined. However, the situation is now
improving, he added.
The official said at present, the CDA is supplying 63 million gallons water
per day (MGD) from Simly dam which will increase to over 65 MGD within the
next three to four days.
He said due to dry spell and rapid decline in water level of Simly dam, the
main source of water supply for Islamabad, the concerned authority had
started water rationing in the capital to utilize the existing reserves. He
said more rains in the catchment areas will will further improve the water
level.●
