4-Tonnes of Hashish Seized in Pakistan
Pakistan Times Staff Report

LAHORE: Authorities in Pakistan seized over four tonnes of hashish intended to be smuggled to the Netherlands.

"Anti-Narcotics Force has recovered 4,010 kilograms hashish from Lahore," Brigadier Ashafqur Rashid Khan, director of the ANF says.

The hashish was hidden in a consignment of rice bags and was booked by a local firm in the name of a Dutch company, Khan said.

Value

The hashish was valued at 350 millions rupees (5.97 million dollars) on the international market, Khan said.

"We are conducting the raids to arrest the people who booked the consignment," Khan said.

Thai Lady Caged

Customs authorities also arrested a Thai woman at Lahore airport who had swallowed 90 capsules containing heroin in a bid to smuggle them to Thailand.

"We have arrested a Thai woman who was to board a Thai airline flight ... for Bangkok and recovered over 90 capsules from her abdomen which contained heroin," a customs officer said.

Drug traffickers often use Pakistan as a transit point for the shipment of narcotics from neighbouring Afghanistan, which is the hub and world's largest producer of opium.●
