Mahmood-IV notches first Win in Karachi

KARACHI: Mahmood-IV
notched-up their first win in Karachi Cup Bridge Championship when they beat
Mushahid-IV by 20-10 Victory Points (VP) after a spirited fight in the round
robin qualifying league at Aslam Bridge Hall Sunday evening.
The match was decided in the first set of 12 Boards, when Mahmood-IV
returned with a plus score of 27 IMPs. The very first Board brought a
moral-boosting swing to Mahmood-IV when in the Open Room, Naeem-Khalid Zaki
landed in Three-clubs, duly doubled for down one and on the same board their
Partners reached an ambitious contract of 3NT, doubled, redoubled down
three.
It gamed a neat 15 VP swing. Board 13 was another minor suit swing.
Mushahid-Maqbool bid three Club for one down, while Mahmood Naqvi-Lutufullah
also landed in the same contract, which was doubled by Naeem-Khalid, but
they reeled off required tricks for 670. It gave them another 13 VP.
On Board 15 Naeem-Khalid Zaki bid 2H and made doubled for 470 i.e 9 IMP
swing to Mushahid when their closed room pair bade One No Trump for down
one.
Mushahid Nets
Mushahid netted another major swing on Board 14 Naeem-Khalid Zaki very
correctly bid and made Four Spades, Mushahid and Maqbool defeated 3NT of
Rahimullah and Iqbal Abidi which pair was playing for Mahmood-IV.
In the second round of 12 Boards, the scores were equal, thus Mahmood-IV won
the match by 27 IMPs, netting 20 and conceding 10 VP to Mushahid.
Earlier, in the Pairs event in the Green House, veteran Asghar Naqvi
partnering Shahab Saeed put up very impressive performance winning the event
with a very high score of 71.43%, which speaks their expertise of the game.
Tariq Zafar-Syed Ameer Hasan scored 68.25%, a very good score indeed for the
second place. Qasim Memon-S.M.Hasnain scored 59.62% for the third spot.●
