LONDON (UK): Jemima Khan and
her Pakistani cricket legend husband Imran Khan have divorced,
it was confirmed Wednesday.
The marriage between the daughter of the late billionaire Sir
James Goldsmith and the cricketer-turned-politician caused a
stir in 1995 for reasons, still to be elucidated by either of
the two.
Perspective
Jemima had been a prominent socialite in London, mixing with
the likes of the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
In a statement, Imran said Tuesday: "I can confirm that Jemima
and I are divorced. My home and future are in Pakistan.
"Whilst Jemima has tried her very best to adapt to life in
Pakistan over the last nine years, my political life has made
it particularly difficult for her.
"This was a mutual decision and was clearly very sad for both
of us. Needless to say, we remain on very good terms and our
children will always be our first priority."
No Strain
The couple, who have two young sons, had denied recent
speculation that their marriage was under strain.
Last year, Jemima said rumours that she was happier in London
than living with her husband in Pakistan were untrue.
She had moved back to the UK to study at The School of
Oriental and African Studies in London.
Imran leads the Tehreek-e-Insaf Party and is thought of as a
possible apex leader of Pakistan with a significant slot.
Akbar Babar, Central Information Secretary of Tehreek-e-Insaf
Party was quoted by the Western media as saying that; "Jemima,
coming from the West, was hoping for a normal family life but
that wasn't possible because of his political commitments and
charity work." |
